Electric Moto Corporation unveils new EMAX 72DS

Take note, Zero Motorcycles and Quantya: There's a new electric motorcycle in town. California-based Electric Moto Corporation (aka EMOT) has announced a new motorcycle called the EMAX 72DS. As hinted to by the bike's name, this electric two-wheeler will be running a 14 kW, 72-volt battery pack that will provide a claimed three-hour run time. Further, the DS signifies that the bike will be a dual sport that's both off-road capable and road legal.

EMOT claims its electric motor puts out 21 horsepower and 40 Nm of torque (nearly 30 lb-ft), which is enough juice to push the EMAX 72DS to a top speed of 60 miles per hour. An aluminum frame, Talon hubs, Brembo brakes and Ohlins suspenders sound good, and the estimated $9,995 asking price sounds reasonable.

Perusing the company's website reveals that there is an electric bicycle, an ATV, a personal watercraft and a scooter in the works. We'll just have to wait and see a production version of the machines before drawing any final conclusions.

The Buckhorn Enduro.......ah yes. as a young boy growing up in Long Beach, Ca during the 70's 80's i was raised on the rocks sand and cactus of the mojave desert. by my early 20's I could pick a line through just about anything and blaze a full tank until i puked. I would read Dirt Bike magazine and ling for the trees, mud and singletrack of Northern California, gazing wantingly at the pictures in Cycle News and the other publication about this mystical event: The Buckhorn Enduro.
30 years later i've found myself living in Redding Ca, home of the Redding Dirt Riders and the Buckhorn Enduro.
The Dirt Riders have decided that the enduro has gone the way of the Do Do bird and have given up the Enduro conquest in favor of smaller club rides and the annual poker Run and The Shasta Dam Grand Prix.
Enter Dual Sport.
The Dirt Riders Have decided to convert the Buckhorn Enduro into the Buckhorn Dual Sport, giving new life to the iconic signature event.
Originally, the Buckhorn waqs held at Buckhorn Lake, East of Redding on Roseburg lumber property. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of the event and the location, large masses of the unwashed public invaded the serene, patoral setting of Buckhorn and absolutley thrashed the shoreline leaving erosion scars that have lasted decades. The event was moved to several locations and finally voted down last year.
This years event will be a two day gear transport event that will be staged North of Shasta Lake and run North to Mt. Shasta on day 1, returning to Shasta Lake on Day 2.

After a long absence due to riding and riding, trail cutting and more trail cutting and generally doing the USFS' job for them, it's time for another post.

Irony here my friends, right here in Northern California. Let me first explain that in actuality, Northern california starts right at Willows and the I-5. There's no exception here, South of there is the bay area, South of that is Central California and then So Cal.
So back to Irony, let's talk about trails and what started the trails, who cuts them and who maintains them and then ultimately who claims them as their own.
Horses, Pack mules, wagon trains, jeeps, skidders (and if you don't know what that is go home) and then motorcycles (Dirt Bikes); this is the natural progression of the trail. No where in that progression is a mountain bike. Yet........the mountainbikers seem to want to claim all the singletrack as their own. Do they cut or maintain it? no. Did they create it? no. They why do they whine like babies when they see a motorcycle on a singletrack?
Ask a local Downieville rider how he sees the situation.

Global warming.........embrace it or reject it?

Snow levels in California are at the 5,000 foot level in January and the riding has not stopped like it usually does this time of year. Thoughts of the ice rides in winter of 2008 are a distant memory melting away like the snow in the Northern Sierra's. There is only one frustrating aspect that stands in the back of my mind like a leaking front tire - Will it Dump 4 feet of snow in March??????

A perfect example contrasting 2008 with 2009 is the differnce in base snow on Mt. Shasta: 2008 - 200 inches - deeper thatn anywhere in the country, 2009 -34 inches, just enough to send you to the repair shop.

All one can do is enjoy what we have, prepare for new routes, new adventures and new friends. I love the snow, but I love riding more.

The best plan of action at this point is to take advantage of the obvious "window" to get an early jump on the events. Get out right now with the GPS and the roll chart tools to find new routes.

2009 Dakar said to be one of the Toughest

La Serena, Chile - The end of the 2009 Dakar Rally in Argentina and Chile is still a week away, but it is already clear that it will be one of the toughest editions in history, even before the Atacama Desert almost certainly makes things worse from Tuesday. Mass withdrawals have forced organizers to shorten stages in recent days, in an effort to retain reasonable numbers of competitors.
One fact is enough to illustrate the situation: there have already been more withdrawals this year than throughout the 2007 rally, when 511 vehicles left Lisbon and 300 arrived in Dakar. In 2006, 475 vehicles left the Portuguese capital and only 193 made it to the end.
The current edition of the rally is one of the longest since 1990, with 9,500 kilometres.
The longest took place in 1992 and went from Paris to Cape Town, with 22 stages across 10 countries, for a total distance of 12,427 kilometres.
In 2009, 40 per cent of the vehicles (224) had already pulled out of the race by the half-way stage of the competition, even before entering what everyone says is the toughest part of the rally, in Atacama.
In the desert, dunes that are 1,000 metres high and 100 kilometres wide promise a particular version of hell.
There are still 320 vehicles in action, said the firm Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), which owns the rally. This means that, of the vehicles that set off from Buenos Aires on January 3, only 137 motorbikes, 111 cars, 58 trucks and 14 quads are still in the running to reach the finish line on Sunday.
However, competitors know that the rally is hard for everyone.
"It's not all over yet. This is where your physical condition starts to matter," said the Frenchman Cyril Despres, the winner of the past two motorcycling editions.
"Now we have got to tackle the Atacama. The hardest part of the race is about to start. There are still a good few days left. I'm going to carry on taking it day by day and trying to avoid problems," said motorcycle leader Marc Coma.
Spanish car driver Nani Roma agreed that the hardest part is yet to come.
"Now we are going to be faced with two or three very difficult days. Everything can change," he warned.
Moreover, extra difficulties could add their weight to the difficult Atacama stretch Tuesday and the Andean passage to Argentina at San Francisco, 4,700 metres above sea level.
Should it rain - as a result of the so-called "Bolivian winter" which causes summer rainfall in the area - things could get worse.
For this reason, the organization will make every effort to prevent a situation where only a handful of competitors make it to the end, race director Etienne Lavigne said on the rally's day off in Valparaiso.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, in turn, called upon drivers to be cautious.
"We want the competition to continue without setbacks or misfortunes," she stressed.

MUSIC ON YOUR HELMET

You know those Hallmark greeting cards, that when you open then, play a tune? That technology is based on a patent developed by a British company called NXT . It allows sound to be heard through objects, like the greeting card, or like car roofs (Toyota uses it for its sound in one of their cars). Using the same patented technology, Silicon Valley Global's TuneBug is releasing three devices that on one side connect to a music system (like an MP3 player, or iPod, or GPS) and on the other side are placed ONTO a motorcycle helmet. No wires are required inside the helmet since there are no loudspeakers! Your helmet is the loudspeaker! The TuneBug makes your helmet vibrate, conducing the sound. According to the report (see the Via:) there is no notice- able vibrations from the helmet. Also, you don't need to put it on a helmet, you can place it on anything that vibrates. The three devices from TuneBug, Vibe, Shake and Quake are all based on the same technology. The Quake has the added advantage that you have a microphone, so you should be able to use it with an intercom or mobile phone.
TuneBug QuakeNo prices are released so far, but expect between US$40-80. The CEO of Silicon Valley Global (SVG) is none other than the guy who created good old Radio Shack back in the 80's, Richard Brown. It's an interesting concept, since it means that you don't need to tear open the lining of your helmet, and it's also easier to take along and change helmets. France's Cyril Despres riding a KTM won the motorcycle section of the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally, but had to take evasive action to avoid a donkey which had strayed onto the course.
Marc Coma of Spain, who finished second on the 294km special from Valparaiso to La Serena, 1min 49sec behind, kept the overall lead in the standings.
It was Despres's second stage win on this year's race that allowed the 2005 and 2007 champion to move into third spot in the standings, 1:33.34 behind Coma.
But his win came in dramatic circumstances.
'Around 15kms from the finishing line, a donkey suddenly shot out from behind a bunch of cacti,' said a stunned Despres.
'I think it was a lucky escape, for both him and me.
'The tracks were quite slippery and that's why you need technical skill to be quick on them and strength too, to keep control of the bike.'
Spain's Carlos Sainz edged closer to winning the Dakar rally when he captured the eighth stage and kept Volkswagen on course for a cleansweep.
Sainz, a former double world rally champion, beat home team-mate Dieter Depping of Germany by just over four minutes on the 294km special from Valparaiso with another Volkswagen driver Mark Miller, 4:12 off the pace.
It was Sainz's fourth stage win in this year's race and gave him a 10:57 lead in the overall standings over South Africa's Giniel De Villiers, also in a Volkswagen and who was fifth on the day, behind Nani Roma, the sole remaining top Mitsubishi driver.
Miller is third overall, 18:05 behind Sainz while Roma is fourth, 33:31 behind the Spaniard.
'As long as the rally isn't over, then nothing is certain,' insisted Sainz.
'Today was the first time we have driven on tracks. In fact, this stage was very much like a traditional rally stage. Up until now, those are the first real tracks that I've seen.
'But it was very nice, very slippery and sometimes quite tricky. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I hope that we'll carry on being as successful as we have been today.'

A voyage to fabled Timbuktu in a flying car may sound like a magical childhood fantasy.
But this week a British adventurer will set off from London on an incredible journey through Europe and Africa in a souped-up sand buggy, travelling by road - and air.
With the help of a parachute and a giant fan-motor, Neil Laughton plans to soar over the Pyrenees near Andorra, before taking to the skies again to hop across the 14-km (nine-mile) Straits of Gibraltar. The ex-SAS officer then aims to fly over the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, above stretches of the Sahara desert and, well, wherever else the road runs out.
But forget Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - this flying machine is based on proven technology. Touch of a button Designed by a 29-year-old British inventor, the Skycar enables its driver to pilot the vehicle at the mere touch of a button as though it were a microlite.
The team behind it calls the Skycar the world's first road legal biofuelled flying car.
Mr Laughton's destination is the west African country of Mali and its city of Timbuktu, a place which has had a mystical, "middle of nowhere" reputation since the heyday of Victorian exploration.

Neil Laughton The daredevil 42-day expedition will pass 4,000 miles (6,400 km) through France, Spain and Morocco, head into the Sahara by way of Mauritania and Mali, before returning home via Senegal.
He had also hoped to make the 22mile (35km) flight across the English Channel, but that plan was vetoed by civil aviation officials.
Even Mr Laughton - who has scaled the highest mountains on seven continents and trekked at the North Pole - admits his latest "boy's own" adventure is a little eccentric.
"I like variety and thought this would be an interesting challenge," he told the BBC News website. "Also Timbuktu is an iconic and quirky destination."
The father-of-two says his long-suffering wife's initial reaction to his latest feat of derring-do was "unprintable", but she is now fully behind the charity mission.

As he prepares to set off from central London on Wednesday morning, Mr Laughton is optimistic the Skycar's maiden voyage will go smoothly. SKYCAR IN NUMBERS

Cost: £50,000 ($76,000) "Clearly the reliability of the car is crucial. We're going to have to cope with wind chill temperatures as low as -30C and blistering heat up to 50C. But it's been fully tested at a secret location and it 100% works." With the help of sponsors, the team has invested about £250,000 ($380,000) developing the vehicle. The brains behind the two-seater Skycar is 29-year-old inventor Gilo Cardozo, who will join Mr Laughton as co-pilot for the African leg of the trip. The self-taught engineer's Wiltshire-based firm, Parajet, manufactures the industrial paramotors that propel the Skycar once it is airborne. He has been dreaming of creating a flying car - the ultimate boy's toy - since childhood.
"The inspiration came from realising we can drive and we can fly, so why can't we do both? The problem all along has been the wing technology, which we think we've cracked with the Skycar," he said. Mr Cardozo built and co-piloted the powered paraglider which took British TV survivalist Bear Grylls over the summit of Mount Everest in 2007.
He plans to sell the Skycar commercially to the public at £50,000 per vehicle, if it can prove its mettle on the Timbuktu mission.
'Unsavoury people'
The team is keenly aware, however, it is not just the environment which could prove hostile.

Mr Laughton said: "Sadly the political situation in some areas on our route is not good and there are some unsavoury people about so we must be careful."
On the road, the Skycar takes barely three minutes to convert into an aircraft.
The driver unpacks the special nylon wing from the boot, before unfurling the parachute on the ground to the rear.
The powerful fan's thrust propels the buggy forward and provides enough wing lift to take off at just 45mph (70km/h), from any "airstrip" longer than 650ft (200m).
Once airborne, the driver uses pedals in the zero-carbon vehicle's foot well to steer the Skycar by tugging cables that change the wing's shape.
Should something go wrong, the pilot can launch an emergency parachute, which should allow the buggy to drift safely back to earth.
A convoy of support vehicles will accompany the team every step of the way.
What the nomadic camel caravans of the Sahara will make of the flying machine is anybody's guess.

Husaberg Factory Racing Team rider, Dustin Gibson, won his first race aboard his new Husaberg FE450 at the Mid-South Hare Scramble Series over the weekend. Gibson, the newest member of the Husaberg Factory Race Team effort, rode a tremendous race despite the slippery track conditions and chilling temperatures. When the checkered flag flew Gibson crossed the line an estimated 15 seconds over the second place rider. “My Husaberg ran great all day. It had excellent handling and helped make my run to the front easy. I can’t wait for the next race!” commented Gibson after the event. In addition to Gibson’s win, Husaberg support rider Harvey Whitaker also finished on top of the podium with a win in the Senior A class.

BMW G 450 X in California? Good Luck!

Well, evidentily after repeated attempts to get a BMW450 x into the State of California by several West Coast Dual Sport associates, it has been determined that it's not gonna happen unless you have residency in the state of sale and also possess a license and insurance of the state of sale. BMW has instructed dealers NOT to sell the bike to Californians under any circumstances. We at NCDS are hoping that 2010 will provide us with a 50 state version that will be readily available with that lovely KYMCO motor.

We've seen prices as low as $7,900 in Arizona with prices slightly higher in Oregon and Nevada.

One would think that if a person were to pull off a purchase of a g 450 X and had it plated in CA it would be a major achievment and possibly add 2-3 K to the bikes value in California. Ah yes, I remember those grey market exotic car days......1980's Newport Beach all over again. Surely, one call to these guys and you could git' r done. http://www.dualsportguys.com/.

You are now in the final preparation for the first Dakar in South America. How did the final testing go for you in France?
The final test in France went very well. We are using the same material as we have been using throughout the year, with just small modifications with the suspension etc., and the adaptation to suit the new rule about noise requirements. So far everything is going very well.

Describe how you have been personally preparing for the Dakar 2009. As well as training on the bike, do you have any special fitness programs? Any mental training?
The work load has increased a lot in the recent months and I have spent many hours in the gym and on the bike so that I can be in top shape in January. Regarding mental training, I continue to work with a sports psychologist that I have been working with for 10 years now. These days it is quite normal for a sportsman to work together with a psychologist.

The Dakar 2009 breaks new ground and brings lots of new challenges. What are your own expectations going into the race this year?
We have a new Dakar in 2009 and this also means new deserts. But I am confident that it will also be great and that it will have the same kind of Dakar spirit. That means it will be hard and there will be risks to take.

The Dakar 2009 is going to take you over 6000 km and through a major part of both Argentina and Chile and over a lot of different terrain. Have you had any experience riding in those countries and what do you think might be the biggest challenges?
I know Argentina and Chile a bit from a previous world championship in Patagonia. The first part of Dakar will be quite familiar but the second half will be totally unknown to me. The heat and the altitude will be among the biggest challenges.

How do you feel about the idea of hold the Dakar in South America and coming in contact with different cultures?
Having the Dakar in South America represents a radical change. It is totally different to Africa but the language will be easier for us Spaniards!

Will you miss Africa?
No, but I won’t forget Africa. It is a constant point of reference for me and it is a place that I would like to return to.

Before you leave for the Dakar 2009, how do you plan to celebrate Christmas?
I will celebrate Christmas with all my family. They are very special and so it this occasion.

Looking beyond the Dakar 2009, what are your plans for the next racing season and what are your special goals?
Our objectives for the 2009 season are very ambitious. We are hoping to have victories in all the events we participate in, both in the Dakar and in other events as well.

WORCS 2009 Schedule

WORCS is quickly becoming the premier racing organization on the west coast and has actually been contracted to co sanction select events that run in conjunction with the AMA western hare scrambles series in 2009. WORCS courses typically are shorter that traditional hare scrambles and are more suited towards a motocross type course, making them more successful from a spectators and media standpoint. Shorter courses means easier coverage and spectator involvement. WORCS has even moved into the world of endurocross, co-sanctioning the EnduroCross Final Holeshot award in 2008. With a PR department headed up by Jason Reed 2009 looks to be a very exciting year for WORCS.
Now if they would just get into Supermoto and rescue her from the wreckage!

Since last year's disbanding of the official Team Honda off road racing program, Johnny Cambell and his Johnny Campbell Racing Team has managed to uphold the Honda Tradition of Conquering Baja's or the Western Continents, toughest off road Challenge.
The combination of Campbell/Norman/Bell dominated the 41st running of the event, which this year was cut down to 631 miles.
This years course was a tight, technical test that Honda's JCR finished managed to finish in 19th place overall in 12 hours, 29 minutes and 10 seconds, averaging 50.56 miles per hour. The 2009 Husaberg FE 450 Gas Tank?

OK, by now you can tell that west coast dual sport loves the new 'Berg. Besides the fact that the Crank Location is 4 inches higher and 6 inches rearward than last years already relocated and redesigned engine, the bike is revolutionary both for stree and dirt. The cylinder lays flat ala boxer allowing the single cylinder roon for a new airbox/tank/fuel injection system. The rear subframe is an all plastic unit, making it lighter and also allowing the posibility to mold any number of mounting scenarios required for the electronics. Brilliant!
The only problem from the Swedes (although Husaberg is owned by KTM)is that yes...the bike is red sticker. Where can you ride year round in AMERICA with a red sticker? My local dealer; Fator's KTM Suzuki, here in Redding Ca took delivery of the 450's last week and i had a chance to chat with the owner, Craig Fator as to the reasoning behind the lack of green sticker status and/or the non dual sportability of the mighty blue and yellow ride. Craig explained that "it has something to do with the gas tank and the inablility to get it DOT approved, somithing about it not being cost effective". Cost Effectiveness aside, if this bike had a green sticker, it would make it dual sportable in many states and perhaps would have resulted in an additional Hundreds of Thousands Dollars of increased income at a time when even a hundred units can make or break a project like the FE 450.

One thing in question that isn't really covered in any of the reviews is:....do you have to stand up to ride it? The 'Berg has a "linkless" suspension like the KTM's and in order to go real fast, you have to stand up to make it track.
After reading the various reveiws on the FE 450 (being a nobody and not being able to actually test the bike)it sound like a shoe-in for bike of the year. Also in the line-up, a 570 - how perfect is that for a two day 500 miler?

Just my opinion. Perhaps the Husaberg HQ is just a testbed for KTM to glean new innovative tech and turn it orange. One thing is for sure, if you're thinking about a Dual Sport in '09 the Beta is probably your best bet.

Let's run it down:

Honda - fuel injected - who cares, it's a Honda, your top end won't last a season if you really ride.

Suzuki - you've got to be kidding, a 250 or a pig or a bigger pig? not

Yamaha - a good choice, the WR is reliable and a work horse

Kawasaki - KLX? it's more of a race bike and very uncomfortable

Aprilia - Don't know about you but i didn't graduate from Davis as an Ortodontist.

BMW - I'm on the fence about reliability - great design and goemetry, still needs suspension upgrades by the looks of it.

That leaves the Beta, they took a great, reliable bike and made it better by adding a linkage in the rear and upgrading the fork to the Shiver and also the rear shock to an Ohlin. And by keeping the already reliable KTM motor, it's bulletproof and very rideable.

There can’t be a much clearer statement that this: BMW Motorrad has recruited the some of the world’s enduro racing elite into its ranks: David Knight, Juha Salminen and Marko Tarkkala. This is something the World Enduro Championship hasn’t seen for a long time! The BMW Motorrad factory team for 2009 reads like a “Who’s Who” of the enduro world. This shows fairly clearly just how high the team has set its aspirations this time around: the aim is to be right up at the front. The decision as to who will enter which categories and competitions will be made at a later stage, but one thing is certain now: BMW Motorrad Motorsport will be entering the World Enduro Championship as well as the XCC in Europe. In addition there will be the real classics and some demanding extreme enduro races – perfect for Andreas Lettenbichler and Gerhard Forster. After all, the two of them already secured some surprise achievements in 2008. There are also plans to enter individual races of the US series GNCC.

Local bug, bike teams prep for Baja 100 run
Two experienced local teams are setting up for a run at the Baja 1000, the strenuous off-road race that kicks off Nov. 21 in Ensenada, Mexico.
Mount Hermon’s Jeff Moore is joined by his brother, Pat, and two of Pat’s friends from Elko, Nev., as the team attempts to win the 250-Plus Sportsman Class division riding their 2008 KTM EXCR450 motorcycle.
The Moore brothers are coming off a June win in the Baja 500, the short version of the rugged off-road race, in which Pat fell from the bike and broke his collarbone, leaving Jeff to finish the final 200 miles without a switch.

Pat is fully healed, and the team will be taking a practice run on the course Nov. 15 to get ready for the race.
The team expects the race to take about 20 hours of continuous riding.
The other local team, Desert Dingo Racing, is looking to finish the Baja 1000 for the first time after coming up short during their first attempt in 2007.
Desert Dingo Racing, represented locally by Richard Palasik and Jim Graham of Felton, will be the official World Diabetes Day Car in the race.
They will be raising money for diabetes research and passing out 4,000 boxes of crayons with the warning signs of diabetes printed on the back.
The team also has a “hero” card that shows the team’s 1969 VW Beetle and has the warning signs of diabetes printed in Spanish on the back.
There are four Volkswagen’s competing in the team’s division. To get a step up on the competition, the team solicited advice from a nine-time winner who advised them to raise their suspension 4 or 5 inches.

Just hoping you were able to watch the Brazilizn GP to see the race of the century. Even though Masa won on the last lap in the rain, and thought he won the world Championship during the cool down lap, Hamilton (rain tires) passes Glock (no rain tires) for fifth place to take the title and become the youngest F1 champion in history. The title was won by 1 point in the final corner of the final race of the season in which the rain came on the final lap. Masa's comment after the podium was "that's racing".

3. James West (GB) “With the foggy start, it was like a winding road in Scotland. The stage today didn’t allow you to relax at all. In fact in the first 20km I came off the bike three times because of the soft sand. The middle part was ok and in the last part again I had the same problems, coming off the bike several times.”

6. Francisco Lopez (RCH) “Today was very, very difficult and very long. Combined with the soft sand it proved to be good training and I feel very happy about the way I rode the bike.”

32. Ruben Faria (P) “It was very hard for most of the way. There were some fast sections which were good. 20km from the finish I suffered clutch problems so I’m pleased to complete the stage.”
